Artapela Hill In Bandung Indonesia

It seems that a place called "Artapela" is now buzzing in the ears of climbers. This cool place with green hills and a beautiful sunrise can spoil anyone who visits it, but what exactly is "Artapela"? How did it originate? Mount Gambung Sedaningsih is a part of the Malabar mountains located at 7° 10' 43"S, 07° 38' 53"E in the South Bandung area of Sukapura Village, Kertasari District. Somehow, the story of this mountain became known as "Mount Artapela".

Artapela was a special place during the royal era of the Sukapura district. Etymologically, "Artapela" means "Arta" (treasure) and "Pela" (together), which translates to "Joint Treasure". In this sense, Artapela was a place that was closely guarded by the kingdom because it was used to store property for the entire kingdom and society. To reach it, a fortress named Argasari (Fortress of Defense) was built to guard it.

While Mount Gambung Sedaningsih is a mountain located next to Artapela, according to local residents, Artapela is actually the name of a plantation block in the area of Mount Gambung Sedaningsih. The peak of Mount Gambung has an altitude of about 2194 meters above sea level, but climbers prefer to camp at the Peak of Sulibra, which has an altitude of 2076 meters above sea level (north of Mount Gambung) because it has a large space to set up tents and a good view, especially during sunrise. The peak is named after the Sulibra tree, which serves as a marker of the peak. However, at this time, the condition of the tree is damaged and without branches.

It is unfortunate that, behind the beauty of Mount Gambung Sedaningsih, many local residents have expanded their agricultural land to the flat Savanna Dog (Savanna Anjing) area (named so because there are often many garden guard dogs), and there is also agricultural land around the peak of Mount Gambung Sedaningsih. Its position in the agricultural area has led to the mountain being surrounded by plantations, from its foot up to the forests on the slopes of the mountain, which have been turned into agricultural lands. This sad sight can be clearly seen when walking along the northern slope after the Rasamala forest. To get there, one can enter the eastern slope, turn to the south, then continue west to Lake Situ Aul. Massive plantations have been pushed into the slopes of the Gambung-Sedaningsih mountain slope. Hopefully, those of us who want to visit this place can preserve the natural beauty of Mt. Gambung Sedaningsih.
